Hotel to Heart: Conservatorium Hotel Amsterdam

For me to stay overnight  in a hotel in Amsterdam is highly unlikely, cause it only takes me 30 minutes by car to get there. But nevertheless, I’m always interested in unique design hotels, even if they are close to home. And even more if the hotel has a good restaurant, spa or conference facilities, things I can utilize! Now it happens that coming Saturday I’m attending the Meet the Blogger Event 2012 (an international event for bloggers), taking place in the most talked about design hotel in Amsterdam: The Conservatorium Hotel. Reason for me to explore the hotel some more and to pay the hotel a pre-conference visit.

The Conservatorium is a high-end luxury lifestyle hotel that will offer you an unique experience. It is ideally located across the Rijksmuseum and other major museums, and amidst  prestigious designer-fashion boutiques. As soon as you walk in you forget the bustling streets and lower your pace to take in the space, and historic elements while enjoying the tranquility.  The lobby is an airy, modern chic and light space with a lot of daylight coming in from the glass roof and oversized windows. Hotel Conservatorium Amsterdam was formerly Amsterdam’s Sweelinck music conservatorium. It was originally built at the end of the 19th Century and conceived by the renowned Dutch architect Daniel Knuttel as the Rijkspostspaarbank Building. Award-winning Milan-based architect, furniture and interiors designer Piero Lissoni has embraced the history of the building in the design we can experience today. The brick walls, terazzo flooring, and tiles are seamlessly integrated with modern pieces.  [continue reading after the picture]

Furnishing from leading manufacturers such as Cassina, Living Divani and Vitra  are complemented by Piero Lissoni’s own custom-made furniture and lighting. I was immediately drawn by the vintage Asian rugs which create a warm and eclectic ambiance. And the famous knotted chairs by Dutch designer Marcel Wanders!  [continue reading after the pictures]

The Conservatorium Hotel has 129 rooms, eight floors, with room categories in the property ranging from superior, deluxe, grand deluxe and suites of varying sizes. Paying homage to  the building’s original lofty ceilings and almost half of the rooms have been configured into stunning duplex layout with oversized functional windows and exposed structural beams.  [continue reading after picture]

The Conservatorium Hotel also has a spa, and several exclusive boutiques. Bonebakker Jewelers, one of the exclusive boutiques in the hotel is housed in the former director’s chamber of the Rijkspostspaarbank. Bonebakker has a long tradition, being  the one who provided the jewels of King Willem I’s crown. There is also a newly opened Skins Cosmetics, La Casa del Habano (cigars), and Culti, an Italian design home fragrance brand. My conclusion: the Conservatorium Hotel is a gem in the heart of Amsterdam well worth a visit or a stay (if it matches your budget).
