30s Magazine

This weekend I’m going to curl up with three magazines that I think, exceed themselves this month. The latest issues are very hard to resist if you like style and elegance in interior, and if you love colour. These issues are ones that will not end up in your paper bin. The content is timeless and the articles are interesting reads, you know the ones you want to read all over again and again?

More Than Classic (issue 1, 2013)

More Than Classic highlights one of the major trends in home decor this spring: Florals. From floral wallpaper, to fabrics, rugs, pillows, to real flower arrangements on your table. You’ll see tropical flowers, lush floral prints and millefleurs. My favourite part in the magazine is a production by Annemarijn Hoorens (who I happen to know personally). It depicts floral wallpapers and fabrics in different settings and styles, making it accessible to everyone. It shows that floral prints are no longer old-fashioned or rigid.

In a six-page feature article we learn everything about the queen of floral prints: Laura Ashley. Beautiful photographs show, that she moves with the times and that her designs are (with little alterations) timeless indeed. A floral issue wouldn’t be complete without Liberty London. MTC made a collection of Liberties impact on almost everything in design, from footwear, to post-its and lamp shades.

I also like the shopping route feature where we are taken to one of my favourite streets in The Hague: the Frederikstraat. This month MTC recommends five books that are all on my wishlist. From Kelly Wearstlers “Rhapsody” to interior resource “New Paris Style”. Another feature article that is interesting and accompanied by stunning photos, is a piece on the city Grasse, in southern France. It is the epicenter of the perfume industry.

Last but not least, MTC looks back on the Dutch furniture fair the Woonbeurs, and the home they created and exhibited at the fair. You can see my own report of their exhibition home here.

Residence (issue 3, Mar 2013)

Residence goes from catwalk to home in their March issue. Its theme is home couture and interior fashion. Nowadays, fashion designers are no longer limited to the catwalk, but are increasingly pointing their arrows towards the home interior design market. Their fabric adorns pillows, curtains, wallpaper and rugs, making your interior accessories eye catchers with iconic allure. In my blog post about Roche Bobois you could already see how Missoni extends its designs to furniture. Fashion designers are extensively involved in decorating luxury hotels and now they are also setting their mark in the home interior industry with their own home collection as part of a complete lifestyle brand. Ralph Lauren and Missoni paved the way in 1983, Fendi, Versace and Armani soon followed.

I just love this issue! It’s full of colour, patterns and prints. Dutch fashion designer Mart Visser reveals his first ever wallpaper collection. Spreads of interior fashion adorn the pages to inspire and lure us into another world. And in a six page feature we can read how Jean paul Gautier launches his first complete home collection with the French fabrics brand Lelievre. The article also highlights Jean Paul Gautier’s exhibition in Rotterdam, which I visited last Wednesday. Stay tuned for a full report on that on my blog this weekend, because it was mind-blowing! I’m still in awe over what I’ve seen.

In “Dress your House” the magazine depicts the most stunning home couture: awe-inspiring fabrics in an array of colours and patterns. Another great piece is the article about fashion icons e.g. Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, Diane von Furstenberg, Marni and Alexander McQueen, who teamed up with the Rug Company. Imagine having one of their rugs under your feet. And then there is the background feature about Louis Vuitton’s love for art and how that is prevalent and incorporated in his work and stores.

Eigen Huis & Interieur (Feb 2013)

The February issue of Eigen Huis & Interieur is the Glamour issue. It’s boasting homes of the granddaughter of Missoni, starstylist Kelly Wearstler, walk-in closets, moodboards of celebrity designers, and the window stylist of Hermes and Anna Wintour. I’m swooning over the interior of the Missoni granddaughter. She mixes and matches styles, colours and patterns, and it still looks coherent. Their shopping guide of Dutch city Arnhem gives us the inside scoop to get the best out of a city trip to this design hotspot in the East of the Netherlands.
