Whenever I’m in a foreign city I visit the local market.. I love to browse the stalls and see how differently they display their produce and goods. I feel that the markets are the best places to go to really blend in with local life. Here’s where you see the residents shop, you can smell and taste local food, and really dig into the culture.
In Athens there are several markets, but since I stayed at the Fresh Hotel and the Grecotel Pallas Athena, the nearest market (only a few steps away) was the Varvakios Agora, the Athens central market. It is a feast for your eyes to see the piles of different olives, Greek spices and herbs, and fresh sausages. The produce is neatly stacked in symmetrical rows. On the opposite side of the stalls there are several antique and thrift shops. The market stretches across the street into a huge hall where they have meat and fish. To get there, take the metro to Omnia or Monastiraki. And don’t leave without at least buying some delicious olives!

Cool choices the Fresh Hotel with its great rooftop view on the Akropolis, especially at night with a nice glass. I also enjoyed the breakfasts there with nice modern Greek influence. But the central market hall really beats everything. I have never been in a place where there are so many butchers next to each other. And the fish section in the midlle was incredible as well.

love your blog post too! I was overwhelmed by the butchers, and the smell of the meat. So I liked the outside with produce better
