8 Tips how to take care of Orchids

Orchids, you either love them or hate them. I personally love them because they evoke sophistication and glamour, but also a tropical feeling. Did you know that there are over 25,000 different orchids species? Each have their own color, pattern and shape. Originally they grow in tropical rainforests, on cliffs, and in the highest tops of trees. Nowadays, they cultivate them in glass houses. Cultivating orchids can take up to 5-10 years.

How to take care of orchids

  1. Dip the orchid (preferably in his plastic pot) in a bucket of water, so it can soak up water through the bottom holes. Do this once a week for about 10 minutes. After dipping let it drip excess water before returning it to its earthware pot
  2. Keep the orchids dryer in winter than summer. In winter they are in hibernation mode
  3. An alternative way to water orchids is by putting an ice cube on top that will gradually melt.
  4. Put orchids in a light place but not in direct sunlight
  5. Keep them in room temperature of 18-20 degrees Celsius
  6. Once all flowers are withered, keep the plant in a dark place like e.g. the basement or garden shed but continue to nurture them as you did before. After a season they will develop blooms again.
  7. Give them special orchids food monthly
  8. Repot them every 2 years

Orchids don’t like…

  1. wet feet
  2. cold draft
  3. direct sun light
  4. central heating
  5. a fruit bowl. Fruits produce gas that age the flowers.

Once you know how to nurture your orchids, it’ll become a piece of cake and you can start collecting different species. Do you have other tips? Please share them by leaving a comment. For more information and inspiration about orchids visit www.orchidsinfo.eu
