Last week I visited the fashion exhibition ‘Frans Hoogendoorn’ in the Gemeentemuseum The Hague. Although it’s a small exhibition, I do think it’s a must-see for anyone who appreciates fashion and couture in particular. You can easily combine your visit with the another interesting exhibition in the Gemeentemuseum like e.g. the Art Deco expo. Frans Hoogendoorn is a Dutch couturier and a household name in the Netherlands for over 40 years. Throughout his career he has consciously avoided the limelight, even though he dresses royalty, and has high society and diplomats as clients. His designs reflect a typical Hague style, that of diplomats, court life and aristocracy. But you can also immediately recognize that he is inspired by classic icons like Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. His creation have international allure and timeless elegance.
The style icons like Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy were dressed by Balenciaga and Givenchy, couturiers who Hoogendoorn greatly admires. However his style is typically distinctive by use of vibrant colours and contrasting combinations. Still he is equally fond of graphic black and white creations. He uses the finest fabrics from Italy and France and classic couture techniques. Frivolous bows are his trademark.
