As we head towards the winter it’s a good time to make your front porch or entryway winter-ready. Something that is often overlooked is the doormat. Although it’s mostly a functional essential to keep your floors and carpets clean, you can also use it as a statement piece to make a first impression with your guests.
Most of the dirt that is brought into your home is from shoes. I therefore have the strict rule to take of shoes in the hallway. How to choose the right doormat
I tend to choose a doormat that looks good and pairs with the colour tone and style of the rest of the house. For outdoors I always choose coir doormats because they stop the dirt on my shoes in its track. Coir is perfect for scraping off dirt and is all-weather resistant. Because coir is a natural fibre (husk of coconut), they do shed a bit. For inside I prefer a synthetic pile doormat because they’re good at removing moist dirt. You’ll get the best result by using two doormats both inside and outside the door. This gives you two ways to stop any dirt or moisture coming in. Also, don’t forget to clean the doormats regularly.
