Sunset Dinner at the Kapari Wine Restaurant on Santorini

The Greek island Santorini is boasting with charming taverns and picturesque family restaurants serving up typical Greek food. The majority of them also have a seaside terrace and thus the coveted ‘sunset view’ that Santorini is famed for. However, one restaurant you really have to try, is the Kapari Wine Restaurant in Imerovigli. I had dinner here twice, and wish I could have tried everything on their menu. After reading all the raving reviews on trip advisor, I had very high expectations. My expectations were exceeded.

The Kapari Wine Restaurant is located in the Kapari Natural Resort. Perching on the highest point on the island, you can indulge in a dinner with spectacular views on the vulcano, caldera, and Aegean Sea.  On the outside terrace you are guaranteed a front row seat to the pinks and oranges of the majestic sunset. On cooler evenings you can opt to sit inside in a charming and intimate space with a neutral colour palette.

The Kapari Wine Restaurant serves Mediterranean/Greek cuisine based on homemade recipes, using traditional, local ingredients. Their wine selection is also superb with many local wines from nearby wineries. Be prepared for fresh, tasty delicacies that are presented in a painterly manner. Their olives and capers are so much more flavoursome than what we are used to in northern Europe. And then there is their pumpkin soup with white wine and crayfish tails – it is the best pumpkin soup I have ever had. It’s creamy, sweet, and full of flavour. Topped with fried red beet pasta strings and a foam it’ll leave you wanting more.

Three musts to eat when visiting Santorini are Fava, the island’s signature dish, white eggplant, and the Santorini cherry tomatoes . Fava is an authentic rustic Santorini dish. It is a puree of yellow split peas, garlic or onions, and olive oil. So simple yet so divine. At the Kapari Wine Restaurant they included all three of these ingredients into one dish: fava on top of grilled white eggplant with roasted cherry tomatoes, caramelized onions and capers.

As you eat our way through the different courses, the sky turns more dramatic into deeper reds and the sun slowly descents into the mystic sea.

Since we had dinner there twice, I also tried multiple mains: a black risotto with scallops, and the beetroot raviolli stuffed with lobster and topped with gambas. I also had a bite of the arugula pesto risotto. All three mains were lip-smacking good.

I haven’t tried any desserts but I trust they are as just as high standards as the other courses were. As for the service, that is top-notch. Do be advised to book in advance as it fills up quickly each evening. What budget to consider? Appetizers €10-15, Mains €20-30, Desserts €6-10

Thank you Kapari Wine Restaurant for the lovely gastronomic experience!
