When heading down to the Keys also be prepared for the lack of many pristine beaches. It is therefore wise to read up on where to find them which I obviously did. Consequently I had 3 wonderful sun-filled afternoons at the beach and all of them were pretty and up to my standards. And believe me, my beach standards are quite high. So, let’s reveal?

Sombrero Beach at Marathon
My personal favourite beach is Sombrero Beach in Marathon. It is a family friendly beach with a small kids playground, shallow waters and calm waters. The small but long strip of sand is parted by low bushes and adjacent to a green field where you can picnic, play or relax under a tree. The water is turquoise blue and there’s powdery sand, which is very rare in the Keys. There are restrooms and changing rooms. – mile marker 50
Bahia Honda State Park
Bahia Honda State Park beach is a narrow strip of sand with an impressive view on the historic bridge and the overseas highway 1 bridge. Besides beaching it is also a great (500 acres) park for hiking, bird watching, and camping. For kids there’s a butterfly garden. There are only a few shady spots so come prepared with sun screen and umbrellas. At the small boat marina there’s a shop selling ice cream and soft drinks, and there are rest rooms and changing rooms. – mile marker 37 – http://bahiahondapark.com/
Fort Zachary Taylor State Park
The southernmost beach of the United States is the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor Park. Besides the beach it is a recreational park, and a historic landmark with the mid 1800s military fort as a monumental icon. This beach is also a family beach with rental loungers and umbrellas, a snack joint, and multiple hammocks under the trees. From Duval street it is only a 5 minute bike ride, but there is also plenty of parking space. – http://www.fortzacharytaylor.com/
