Autumn is such a magical time. Especially on sunny days, when the autumn colors are vibrant, a walk in nature can really be uplifting and invigorating. In the outskirts of the village Voorschoten, tucked between Wassenaar and Leiden, you’ll find Duivenvoorde Castle & Gardens; a peaceful and mesmerizing retreat to take in autumn’s golden glory and admire the stunning castle and its gardens. Here’s what to expect when visiting this hidden gem.

Duivenvoorde estate is tucked away like a green oasis in a highly urbanized area but nonetheless the area offers many opportunities for cycling and walking. Even if you don’t live in the area, you can rent a bike at nearby train station Voorschoten and start your tour from there. If you arrive by car, a stately avenue lined with beautifully colored oak trees leads you to the parking lot. From there, several winding pedestrian paths go through the estate and around the castle.

From the parking lot it’s only a few steps to the pond in front of the castle. Be sure to stop and take in the picturesque bridge in its autumnal glory, and admire the stunning view of the 13th century Castle. Enjoy the dazzling autumn colours bedecking the bridges and pathways and the gorgeous view of the various lakes – definitely an Instagram worthy photo! We spotted lots of toadstools and mushrooms, woodpeckers and robins.

Don’t forget to step into the walled Leiden garden, a utility or vegetable garden from around 1879. The garden has only been open to the public for several years. Visitors can enjoy the beautifully landscaped garden with orchard, fruit trees, colorful flower beds and a herb garden. There’s also a small café to grab a coffee.
