My grandfather John Valentine Flegg was as Fireman on the Gothenburg and drowned when it went down off the coast of Queensland on Thursday 4 March 1875 leaving 4 young children orphaned. One of them was my father William Henry Flegg they had been placed in the Randwick Asylum prior to the ship leaving Sydney. My father had an extremely hard child hood at times living on the streets. He rose above his trials and became a successful father and business man. It was said that many of the men who drowned would not remove their money belts filled with gold from the gold fields.
