When life gives you lemons

When life gives you lemons you really start to appreciate life’s simple joys. Although a lot of people THINK they are living a mindful life, it usually takes a life changing experience to discover that you were actually living a privileged life. I recently found this Ted talk where Neil Pashricha tells us how he experienced several bad things which drove him to start a blog. I could really relate to his story because like him, I also started blogging after some negative life changing experiences. And like him, my blog has helped me to discover and savour life’s little joys more than I ever did. That doesn’t mean that I gave up my luxurious things, I just look at them differently now, appreciate them more, and I alternate them more with simple things like going to an orchard, picnicing in the park, or crafting.

My photography, and the search for unique blog stories forced me to explore new things and see small details, pleasures, and treasures in life, nature, things and people. Oprah calls it an aha moment. I had my first big load of lemons when my mom died in 1996. My second in 2002 when I spent 4 weeks in Cuba, mingling with the locals and being confronted with their lemons. And my third bowl of lemons came in 2011 when I got ill. It’s an ever continuing process that helps you grow, and I’m happy that my blog helps me find the ingredients to make lemonade. Lemonade for myself, and hopefully also for my readers.

Neil Pasricha’s blog 1000 Awesome Things savors life’s simple pleasures. In this heartfelt TED talk, he reveals the 3 secrets (all starting with A) to leading a life that’s truly awesome. (Filmed at TEDxToronto.) Neil Pasricha uses the power of blogging to spread a little optimism each day about the awesome things that make life worth living.
