The new craze in diets is Paleo. Have you heard of it? In fact it is not a diet but more a way of life. I started the paleo diet two weeks ago and my health has already improved, and I also lost some weight. Paleo, or the paleolithic diet is a modern nutritional plan that derives from the assumption that human beings need to return to the nutrients that we were meant to eat. The way we ate when we lived as cave men, and hunters.
The diet consists mainly of fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, eggs, vegetables, fruit, and nuts, and excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, potatoes, refined salt, refined sugar, and processed oils. It is gluten-free, and low on bad carbs and bad fat. In summary, you only cook fresh produce and pure poultry, fish and meat, and you ban any refined and artificial food, carbs and dairy. So what do I eat?
If you follow me on instagram it probably didn’t go unnoticed that I start my days with a fresh smoothie of different fruits with almond or soy milk. I also add hemp or chia seeds. On days when I have a slow morning I make an omelet with salmon, or turkey bacon. Another alternative is pumpkin pancakes with almond meal or coconut flour. Other options are soy yoghurt with fresh fruits and nuts and seeds.
Between breakfast and my snack I drink lots of herbal tea and water. You can also make your own with fresh mint or basil, and add a slice of lemon or orange. At 10.30 a.m. I usually have one piece of fruit, or a handful of berries or grapes.
For lunch I always have a salad. You can diversify as much as you like. One day it’s with chicken, and the other day with tuna, or mackerel. I do use dressing out of a bottle, that’s fine as long as you don’t splurge. If you like something warm for lunch, consider a rich pumpkin soup, or chicken broth.
For dinner I have stir fried meals with chicken, grilled fish with vegetables, or soup. There are hundreds of recipes out there! Until now I don’t miss the rice, potatoes, pasta or noodles. And I’m not hungry either.
I haven’t really tried the paleo desserts yet, but there are many out there. I did make pumpkin muffins with raisins and goji berries. Instead of flour I used almond meal. A small bowl of soy yoghurt is also a nice treat after dinner. Drizzle honey for on top for your sweet tooth.
