The most recent addition to culinary Leiden is the small and cozy bistro Jeanpagne on Nieuwe Rijn 27 . A gorgeous light and breezy space where you can flock to all day for either coffee, lunch, appetizers, or dinner. The owner has travelled to many places but always had a special connection with France. Opening a French bistro style restaurant was therefore an obvious choice. The menu is versatile and changes regularly as they cook with seasonal produce. Fish, chicken or meat, pasta or a salad, there is plenty to choose from. They also have a fine selection of wines.
In the open kitchen, the no frills but very tasty dishes are prepared with much passion. Focal point is the glass roof and the striking Portugese tiled floor. A large Moulin Rouge/cabaret style statement photo completes the elegant vibe of the space. The photo is called ‘Femmes à la table’ by Marcel van der Voorst
On the wall there are quintessential French brasserie lamps.
The bespoke, and typical French bar was flown in from France (Paris – Dax). The owner predicted years ago that if he ever opened a restaurant, he would get this bar.
I tried the Club sandwich and it was pretty good! Next time I’m going for dinner. Jeanpagne is hands down a place where friendly service and good food will win you over to return.
