In 1856, the Polish tailor Krasnapolsky arrived in Amsterdam and built an icon in the Dutch capital: the NH Collection Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. On February 17, 2016 his legacy got a new dimension with the opening of the über cool cocktail bar The Tailor. The journey of the Polish-Dutch Krasnapolsky tailor is also what inspired the bar’s concept. They serve modern and exclusive cocktails, homemade bitters, infusions, sodas and liqueurs, which are developed in collaboration with famous Dutch bartenders Tess Posthumus and Wynand Fockink. The Tailor offers cocktails that fit like a tailored suit: suitable for every taste, occasion and style.
The interior design of The Tailor
That Krasnapolsky was a metropolitan, traveling tailor, with a passion for fabrics is palpable in everything in the decor. The decor tells his story with materials from all corners of the world: silk, buttons, stitching and pinstripes are flawlessly integrated in the interior design. The interior is full of contrasts. Bare brick walls are combined with dark colored, leather sofas and jeweltone silk ribbons in lighting. Antique mirrors and a golden touches add glam and sophistication. The details referring to the tailor artisan are genius: a gold measurement tape stretches along the bar, immense scissors on an accent wall and vintage tailor sewing mannequins are dispersed in the space. In summer you can enjoy one of the quality cigars in the courtyard.
The Cocktails and bites
The Tailor creates appropriate cocktails for every taste, style and occasion. The menu is therefore divided into four categories: Cashmere, Silk, Cotton and Hemp. Cashmere cocktails are strong concoctions like the Dutch Coupe, which pays tribute to Princess Beatrix with Wynand Fockink Korenwijn, orange blossom water, orange bitters and a flamboyant garnish. The Silk-category is floral, fruity and bubbly with Aruba Aloe as an alternative to the G & T. In the Cotton-section are fresh and accessible beverages, which includes the sweet-fresh Killer Cocktail. Hemp comes with hearty, smoky and spicy flavors for drinks with a contemporary ‘Mad (wo) men’ style.
I tasted the signature cocktail “Traveling Rose” with champagne, Monkey 47 gin, and perfume bitters. Just before serving the drink, the bartender spritzes the perfume bitter on the cocktail to give it that finishing touch.
I also tried their bites, which were delicious. Think seared bavet steak with passion fruit dressing, or seared scallops with mango, basil and bonito flakes. The Tailor is a perfect spot to call in the weekend, or for a night out in Amsterdam. A great addition to stir up the cocktail bar scene in Amsterdam!
