Cornelis Rotterdam

Hotspot Rotterdam: Cornelis Bar & Kitchen

Cornelis Rotterdam

Rotterdam has gained another top notch restaurant. Its name is Cornelis Bar & Kitchen. The 2-storey restaurant with large outside terrace and view on the cityhall, is a pleasant spot to spend summer days and nights. The menu by chief cooks IJsbrant Wilbrenninck and Karim Aggoun is boasting with high quality recipes like Dry aged Côte de Boeuf or Procureur of Berkshire pork grilled on coal for a rich and authentic flavour.  A big Robata Flame Barbecue Grill guarantees a food sensation to remember. Cornelis Bar & Kitchen got my enthusiasm by its juicy meats, their pure local ingredients, excellent wines, and artisan products.

The interior design

The interior design is robust yet also warm, inviting and with a splash of urban chic. The soft leather arm chairs in cognac and brown hues invite you to really relax. The space is light and airy due to the full window front and glass staircase. Industrial accents like the pendant lamps and steal constructions hark back to yesteryear as does the historical photo gallery wall and two striking murals. Rotterdam and its history is abundantly celebrated in Cornelis Bar & Kitchen by use of all these references in the interior design.

The Food

Cornelis Bar & Kitchen is bound to amaze you with its very special menu consisting of traditional recipes and pure ingredients. My favourites?

  • The Buratta with caramalised figs, San Mazzo mini tomatoes, basil and balsamico.
  • Or the marinated salmon on cedarwood with pink pepper, lemon zest and potato-egg salad from the Green egg grill
  • I also loved the quail with pomegranate and chorizo
  • As a main you have to try the rib fingers and the Bavette
  • And for dessert I recommend the cheesecake with lemon curd
  • My favourite wines were the Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc and the Bolla, Soave Retro.

The Bar

Downstairs is the bar and wine cellar. Here you can enjoy smaller dishes in a shared dining ambiance, and drinks like GTs, cocktails, spirits and wines. The open wine cellar and the centered bar are the real eye catchers. Cornelis serves over 20 different wines. Surrounding the bar there are several seats, lounge benches and tables. The bar expands into the large outside terrace and bustling Stadhuisplein.
