Hotspot Amsterdam: Wyers Bar & Restaurant

Last month I was invited to try out the (not so) new (anymore) bar & restaurant Wyers in Amsterdam. A splendid opportunity to indulge in American comfort food in the heart of Amsterdam. Wyers Bar and Restaurant is located on the corner of the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and Nieuwendijk, not far from Amsterdam Central Station and adjacent to the Kimpton de Witt Hotel . The concept is clean and simple: classic American comfort food with a modern presentation. New York chef SammyD gives those all American favourites like lollipop chicken wings, pasta carbonara or chicken ‘puttanesca’ a funky twist while staying true to the original ingredients, flavours and textures.

The interior

The interior is minimalist with clean lines and raw materials. Muted colours, concrete, marble and exposed pipes give the space a robust and industrial look. Nonetheless I experienced it as cozy and warm due to the use of warm lighting, warm wood hues and velvet seats.

The food

We started with two scrumptious dishes presented in an unique manner on traditional Dutch crockery. I had the ‘lobster duet’ – a lobster roll and lobster bique and my friend had a wood grilled octupus with chorizo, Turkish salad and sesame yoghurt dressing. We both loved these because of the mixture of textures and balanced flavours.

We also tried the gin tonics which we were not very enthusiastic about. I feel those need improvement. Our wait for the main dishes was (too) long, 45 minutes and when it finally came, the food was cold and my burger was raw inside. My friend’s dish missed seasoning and therefore flavour. So not so impressed with the mains and the service mid evening. But there was still a chance to make up for it with the dessert…

Dessert was amazing! We both ordered cheese cake with red fruits which was presented in a very unique way. It had just the right amount of crunch and sweetness.

Our verdict? With some improvements Wyers Bar and Restaurant could score an eight, but for now we’ll give it a 7.
