How to be an explorer of the world

Whenever I go into the city of Leiden, I always pop into the Museum shops to see if they have anything new, because I love ethnic accessories and travel books. During my last visit I discovered a great book. Although it’s not new – it was published in 2008 – I had never seen it before. How to be an explorer of the world: portable life museum by Kerri Smith is a fun, interactive guide  for exploring and documenting the art and science of travels and everyday life. Smith encourages people to observe the world around them as if they’ve never seen it before, take notes, and focus on one thing at a time.

The book encourages you to be creative with the simple things around you and draw joy and memories from that. It also  inspires to find memories in ordinary things. One tip that I loved is: if you are traveling, take a notebook with you, and document the colours of the country/culture by mixing its natural objects with some water and using it as paint in your notebook together with natural pieces e.g. mud, sand, leaves, spices, shells, stones, wooden pieces. This is such a great idea! I wish I had read this earlier. I would have had a gorgeous notebook by now.
