Cuff Love

It’s cuff love… and also tough, that I can’t buy them all. I’m talking about the leather cuff bracelets by Hamu designs. With ornate gold or silver finishes on the inside, it is the outside that makes it a summer fashion statement not to deny. Cuff bracelets never really go out of fashion. And with an array of popping colours and leather to choose from, there is one for every occasion. The cuff has to be worn single though, or one on each wrist, but don’t stack them. You have to give that arm candy the central stage it deserves. I haven’t decided on the colour yet. Turquoise is my favourite colour, but I can only wear it in summer. So maybe I’ll go with a black or brown one instead. What do you think?

Designer of these leather cuff bracelets is Dutch Lotte Zunneberg.  She runs her own webshop and lifestyle brand Hamu. I met her at the Fashion Weekend Bazaar in Amsterdam and got the 411 on her designs and her brand. She told me that she travels the world to curate materials and works together with local artisans to produce her designs. From Bali, to the USA. Let’s find out more!

Tell us a little about yourself and why you started Hamu?

The concept of Hamu was born in 2011, when I just finished a master interior design. I wanted to create an online portal that would promote crafted goods from around the world. My keen interest in travel and by merging ideas and passions I created Hamu. Hamu provides the global online market with exclusive products handcrafted by local artisans from diverse cultures. All the items Hamu sells are carefully sourced items discovered during my adventures abroad, handcrafted by local artisans from divers cultures.

Hamu shines a light on the rare artisans and artistry found in various communities and stimulates those local economies and while, providing customers with timeless, hand selected items of impeccable quality and style.
The word Hamu is originally Swahili meaning “wannahave” Hamu’s values, and upholds cultural respect and social responsibility. Al the goods are produced under ethnical working conditions. Hamu’s producers are varied, some are individuals others represent artisans who have inherited their skills from previous generations.

What materials do you use in your designs?

All the items I sell are from impeccable quality. I sell a lot of different items with a lot of different materials. Some of the bracelets are made from exotic leathers like stingray, snakeskin, ostrich or alligator. All these leathers are a by-product of the Asian food industry and will normally be discarded as waste. Other items like for example the rings are made from sterling silver or gold and can also be made from white gold. The rings are made to last a lifetime.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from travelling: the rare cultures and the associated colors, materials and shapes are for me a perfect inspiration. To see how the different communities live, work and just living their daily life. To find rare artisans and artistry all over the world and try to help the communities there is my main goal.

What makes your designs unique?

Every item that Hamu sells represents the sole means of the artisans.

For what type of woman are your designs?

The items from Hamu don’t have a particular target group; Hamu sells a lot of different items so there is something for everyone.

What is your best seller and which design is your personal favorite?

Hamu’s collection grows almost every month. At the moment the shop doesn’t have a lot of different items but all the items Hamu has are unique because they are handmade. My favorite item at this moment is my Forget me knot ring. This ring is perfect to give to a good friend, your mother of someone else you love. It’s an unforgettable gift.

 So what’s next?

I add new items to the collection every month so the collection becomes bigger and bigger. I never know which items I add because it depends on my travelling and what I find over there. I want to expand my main collection with special items and add unique and rare items occasionally. That way the collection remains versatile and interesting.

Where can I buy your designs?

You can buy my items on www.hamuu.com. This is my webshop.
The bracelets made of exotic leathers are also available in the webshop but you can also find them in some shops in Amsterdam and Haarlem and soon also in Brussels and Antwerp.

Thanks Lotte!

  1. These cuffs are actually. It designed by Hamu at all! This is an error and the credit should be given where it is due! These are crafted by a woman named Karen from Los Angeles who runs an Etsy shop named Unearthed. I know because I am familiar with her work!
Sad to see credit given to other people for the work of other artists. What a shame!

    1. Hi Mina, I appreciate your concerns but if you read the article you might have noticed that the shop owner of Hamu designs did not take credit but said they are sourced by her: “All the items Hamu sells are carefully sourced items discovered during my adventures abroad, handcrafted by local artisans from divers cultures.
