What to look for when choosing your mask

To leave the professional and surgical ones for our health workers, people are encouraged to use reusable/washable fabric masks to cover their noses and mouths. A cloth face mask is most efficient when it’s made of 100% cotton and has two layers of fabric. It’s even more effective if the face mask has a pocket to insert a filter in between the two layers. The filter can be a PM 2.5 filter or even a coffee filter.  Both filter qualities don’t filter out the smallest Covid particles but if you insert 2 filter layers it at least diminishes the amount of particles penetrating. The face mask is supposed to sit snug on your face. Be sure to pick the right size. Most online sellers differentiate between male, female and kids sizes. To stay safe, regularly replace the filter and wash your cloth face mask daily.

Where to buy face masks online

Now that you know the safety and functional requirements, let’s dive into the style. For the largest assortment of hand-manufactured face masks, made by small entrepreneurs head to Etsy. Here you can look for masks in your favourite colors, prints and patterns. The small business owners come from all over the world so be sure to filter on your location to save on shipping costs.

Repurposed designer fabrics

True fashionistas shop face masks at Irmas World. Her most coveted face masks are made from repurposed Chanel and Céline shoes dust bags. Who wouldn’t want to have those iconic brands plastered on their face? Just as popular are the face masks made of vintage fabrics from renowned designer houses like Liberty London, Maison Pierre Frey, or vintage Hermès.

Stay Safe Amsterdam

Naturally I like to support my local small business owners thus Amsterdam based Stay Safe Amsterdam.  Locally sourced fabrics with gorgeous Batik prints make these my favourites. The fabrics are from impoverished Indonesian communities and are curated and transformed into fashionable face masks. So you’re not only protecting others and yourself, but also supporting Indonesian communities.

Dramatic florals

Are you an art lover? Then you will love this painterly floral mask from Bewooden. Bewooden collaborates with seamstresses from different European countries and uses high quality cottons.

Marine blue something for you?

The blue and white face masks from Dutch Hul Le Kes are perfect for summer. The marine blue stripes, solids and checkered fabrics are fresh and fashionable.
