Surviving self-isolation without skimping on little luxuries

Self-isolation doesn’t mean you have to live in sobriety and without the occasional treat. With these delivery tips you can indulge in life’s little luxuries at home and support small businesses, local producers and niche brands during the Covid-19 crisis

Self-isolation doesn’t mean you have to live in sobriety and without the occasional treat. With these delivery tips you can indulge in life’s little luxuries at home and support small businesses, local producers and niche brands.

Note: Are you self-isolating but also able and willing to make a short drive in the area? In the Netherlands you can find local farmers and producers in your own zip code via www.steundeondernemer.nl #steundeondernemer #supportyourlocals #buyflowersnottoiletpaper

Fresh flowers straight from the farmer

I was devastated to see how millions of flowers had to be destroyed to compost by the flower farmers in the Netherlands due to the Corona crisis. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought demand for flowers to a standstill as borders were closed and international trade diminished. Being a flower lover I had to do something. So while I continue to self-isolate myself, I have my weekly fresh flowers delivered to me in two different ways. First, I re-activated my Bloomon subscription. Bloomon lets you subscribe to a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly surprise bouquet delivery. The mixed bouquets come in three different sizes. https://www.bloomon.nl/

Secondly, I now order my tulips directly from a tulip farmer; Annemieke’s Pluktuin. Normally I go to the tulip farmer myself to pick the tulips from the Pick-your-own tulip field. Because of the restrictions, she re-invented her business model and now does home deliveries. The tulips are a bunch of mixed colours and species and thus far more special than the tulips that you buy at the florist or supermarket. annemiekes-pluktuin.myshopify.com

Luxury handcare products

Washing your hands a trillion times a day is the number one counter measure against the spread of the Corona virus. Experts have confirmed that it really isn’t necessary to use aggressive disinfectant soap but that any type of soap will suffice. All the more reason to use hand care products that are not only effective in cleansing but also nourishing and protective of your hands. I treated myself to a home delivery of Molton Brown hand soap for the bathroom and a Zenology hand soap dispenser for the kitchen. Both liquid soaps nurture your hands and prevent them from drying out. To maintain a perfect moisture balance and to keep them soft, finish your hand wash with a fragrant hand cream! (I order my hand care products at Skins.nl and Babassu.nl)

Wine box straight from small wineries

Virtual happy hours, home schooling and self-isolation all require one thing: a glass of wine! There are many high quality online wine shops but I prefer to order my wine from the Taste Club Box. The subscription service has been a favourite of mine for a long time because it introduces me to new surprising wines from small, family owned wineries, while adhering to my style and wine preferences. After doing an online test, the service defines your wine profile and compiles monthly wine boxes for you. (subscription can be cancelled any time) Tasteclub.nl

Gourmet food and delicacies from local producers

Since I can’t go out to dinner, I’m willing to spend some extra money on home delivery of gourmet foods and delicacies. For fresh lobster and oysters I go to Fish Tales delivering lobster from our very own Dutch lobster fisheries in the Oosterschelde (https://shop-nl.fish-tales.com/) Another sea food favourite is the family-owned Seafood Bar in Amsterdam who delivers a seafood menu consisting of bisque soup, a cold fish platter and different seafood dishes with a bottle of wine. theseafoodbar.com/takeaway

At online supermarket Crisp I order my artisan bread, French croissants and home made cookies, farmers chips, meat from local farms and bio products. Crisp’s assortment is always fresh and comes from the cream of the crop producers, mostly small scale entrepreneurs and bio farmers. You can taste the difference! https://www.crisp.nl/
