Pears abundant at the supermarkets. Poached pears are quintessentially Christmas, either as dessert with ice cream, or paired with beef or turkey as a beautiful side dish. Yesterday I made orange-spice poached pears. The good thing about poached pears is that you can make them in advance and easily preserve them for later. It’s easy to prepare, and you don’t need much. (scroll down for the recipe)
You’ll need
- 6 small pears
- 1 orange (the juice and the peel)
- 150 gr brown sugar
- 3 anise stars
- 3 cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 0,05 l cointreau
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp ginger
Directions
- Peel the pears
- Peel the orange and keep the juice as well as the peel
- Fill a large pan with all ingredients
- Add 1 cup water and bring to simmer while stirring so the sugar dissolves
- Add the pears and fill with water so that the pears are almost covered
- Let simmer for about 20-30 minutes
- Thicken the syrup by adding honey
- Serve luke warm
