Athens hot spot: Collage

On one of my morning strolls through Athens, I accidentally discovered a great place. Only five minutes by foot from metro station Monastiraki, amidst the central shopping district, you'll find restaurant and bar Collage (Kapnikareas 3). What caught my eye was the industrial design and edgy interior. I was pleasantly surprised that the food was also excellent. Collage is open all day so you can just have a cup of coffee and breakfast on the outside terrace in the morning, or lunch or dinner … [Read more...]

Going to the market in Athens

Whenever I'm in a foreign city I visit the local market.. I love to browse the stalls and see how differently they display their produce and goods. I feel that the markets are the best places to go to really blend in with local life. Here's where you see the residents shop, you can smell and taste local food, and really dig into the culture. In Athens there are several markets, but since I stayed at the Fresh Hotel and the Grecotel Pallas Athena, the nearest market (only a few steps away) was … [Read more...]

Athens hot spot: Cartone

One of the hippest neighbourhoods, where mostly youngsters go out for dinner and drinks in Athens is Gazi. I went there once at night, when it was crowded and a great spot for people watching. During lunch time it is less busy but still bustling and fun. One of my favourite restaurants at Keramikos Square is Bar & Restaurant Cartone. The service is excellent, there's an outside terrace, and the food is good and affordable. They serve a varied menu with options including grill, burgers, and … [Read more...]

Perk up your curb appeal with plants (like the Greek do)

Now that spring has sprung it is time to perk up our balconies, gardens and curbs again, as we will be spending more time outside. In the Netherlands I love how people who live in the city center instantly settle themselves in front of their house on a bench with a pot of tea and a book to enjoy those first rays of sun. You can't blame them, because if I didn't have a balcony, I would do the same. But also my neighbours who do have gardens or balconies, swap places from the front of their house … [Read more...]

Hotel to Heart: Fresh Hotel Athens

In the heart of downtown Athens, steps away from the town hall, and only a short walk from Monastiraki is the stylish urban city hotel Fresh Hotel. It's the perfect base to explore the city and its historical landmarks. The hotel was recommended to me by, and I enjoyed the hospitality and interior design very much. The interior is dominated by the famous trend 'house minimal'. Design furniture and lamps from e.g. Foscarini, and Hockney of Minotti give the space a Japanese … [Read more...]

Athens hot spot: Da Vinci Gelato in Monastiraki

What is a holiday without ice cream? Athens' temperatures can get really high, leaving you hot and longing for something to refresh and cool down. After a visit to the historical sites, and a shopping spree in Monastiraki, I discovered the newly opened Italian ice cream parlour Da Vinci Gelato on the corner of Hadrian (no 50). The parlour is the third one in Greece, following Mykonos and Santorini. I was drawn by its vintage interior and the apparel of the ice-scoopers in fifties apparel, … [Read more...]
